The 52 Week Card Project

Last year, I embarked on a fun new project entitled the 52 Week Card Project. The project is fun and fairly easy. Today I'm re-blogging the post from last year and challenging you to join me for another year of snail mail and smiles. I'd love for you to leave a comment if you plan to participate!

I'm not very good at mailing things. Perhaps part of the problem with card making is that I'm so focused on making the card that I never actually get around to mailing the card. Terrible, I know... It doesn't mean that I don't have good intentions. In fact, I write letters to people in my head all the time. Hmmm, I guess that doesn't really count...

So this past weekend, I came up with a plan. Enter The 52 Week Card Project. My goal is to send one card out a week to someone I think about regularly. I knew that in order for this to work, I'd have to make it easy for myself, so I did all the legwork now while I had the energy and motivation. Hopefully, this will make things way easier for me in the future, whether I'm writing card number 2 or I'm at week 52...

So, here's what I did. First I made a list of 52 people in my life who I wanted to let know that I think of them. I went through my phone contacts and my Little Pink Book to help me out. I cheated a bit and put some people down twice - people I think about a lot but don't tell them enough (like my little bros). I included a nice mix of family, current friends, old friends, and colleagues - anyone who crossed my mind at some point during the year and who I thought would enjoy a little note tucked in their snail mail amongst their bills and catalogs on a random day.

Then I spent an afternoon tracking down everyone's addresses. I dug through my stack of Christmas cards, sent out e-mails to my parents getting addresses for relatives, used the handy dandy online white pages, and shot out a few random texts and e-mails. I got back a lot of responses fairly quickly. I typed all of them in and made 52 address labels using fun and fancy fonts that I like. For people who move around a lot or are getting ready to move, I just made a blank label with their name on it. I'll have to track down and fill in the address later.

Then I cut out the labels into 52 single stickers. This was surprisingly the most annoying part of the process... I dropped them all into a pretty glass jar on my desk. I also dug through my giant stash of cards and pulled out various Hello and Thinking of You cards. I didn't bother to try to get 52 cards, because I figured I might make a handful more during the year, but I gathered quite a few. I crammed them into a cute basket and also placed them on my desk. I wish I had a cute photo to share with you today, but alas, this arrangement isn't quite as pinworthy as it sounds. My desk doesn't have fresh cut flowers or those pretty acrylic trays... You know, like this one:

I think this is possibly my favorite desk space ever. One day... But back to the project... Now I have a sweet reminder to mail out a card weekly. I'll just pull out a label, which can be done randomly or I can pick one out if I'm thinking of someone in particular and pen a quick note. No pressure. No need to write that perfect letter detailing all my life happenings since the last time we chatted... Just a quick hello. And hopefully, I'll be sending 52 smiles out this year. :)

Cupcake Inspirations Challenge 292

Hi There! I have a fun, bright card today to kick off the New Year! Today's challenge over at Cupcake Inspirations is a lovely color combination. Sorry, my colors are a little off...

DEEtails:

I started out with this cute tag that my Hubby picked up for me from Target's Dollar Spot section. They always have fun stationary items and I thought the pink was perfect for this challenge. I stamped the sentiment from Oh Hello (a favorite of mine) and added a flower embellishment from a pack of Heidi Swapp's Ephemera. Then I layered some patterned paper from Papertrey's Dotti Biscotti and SU's In Color DSP over a piece of doily. I used my new Alphabet Rotary Stamp, a gift from sweet Naki, to create the bottom sentiment, stamping it in Pretty in Pink ink on some Whisper White card stock. Quite honestly, using the Distressed Dots background stamp on the Rose Red card was an afterthought. I'm glad I thought of it because I'm loving it and hope you are too!

Paper: In Colors 2013-2015 DSP, Papertrey Ink Dotti Biscotti, Rose Red Cardstock, Whisper White Cardstock
Stamps: Distressed Dots, Oh Hello
Ink: Pretty in Pink, Whisper White
Embellishments: Ephemera by Heidi Swapp, tag from Target Dollar Spot, Wilton Doily
Tools: Alphabet Rotary Stamp

Currently... January 2015!

Happy Happy New Year! I'm quite excited about the arrival of 2015. I'm ready for a fresh year, a fresh calendar, a fresh start... How about you? Any resolutions or goals for the year? I'd love some inspiration from you... :)

Here's what's going on with me "Currently..."

WATCHING: Downton Abbey - and oh my goodness, I'm completely obsessed!
I'm always so behind the times with things like television shows, but it works out kind of nicely because Hubby and I have been watching the first four seasons and are eagerly awaiting season five to come out this month! It's much more fun for us to watch it all at once than to have to wait for each new episode to come out... And yes, we are both eagerly waiting!

READING: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone. I know I'm always reading or watching something that has to do with Harry Potter (I'll be completely honest and admit to the fact that part of the reason why I wanted to start watching Downton Abbey in the first place was because of Maggie Smith!) okay, but really, I love Harry Potter and the start of a new year seems a perfectly good reason to start the series from the beginning again.

LISTENING: to Yiruma, a Korean pianist, whose music is just gorgeous. His music popped up on my Pandora station (I have no idea how...) and I just loved it. As promised, Christmas music officially stopped this morning, so I have his YouTube playlist turned on today. The music is so delicate. I plan to play it as background music in my office when I return to work on Monday.

EATING: New Year's cream puffs. Is that a thing? Haha. We got some for our mini celebration last night and since part of Hubby's health goals this year is to reduce his bread intake, it looks like I have a whole bunch of cream puffs to eat!

DRINKING: lots of coffee recently. I got quite a few Starbucks gift cards for Christmas and a lovely travel mug from my mom, which I'm pretty sure makes my Keurig coffee taste even more fabulous! :)

WEARING: leggings! I finally found some that are comfy around my incision area - I'm not really sure why it still hurts so much, but pants are still a no go.

MAKING: lots and lots of pom poms! Michaels had a yarn sale this week, so I stocked up on some supplies and have been busy making little pom poms as I watch Downton Abbey. Hopefully I'll have photos for you soon!

PLANNING: lessons for school. This month's focus is on college awareness, which is a favorite for me. I love using Monster's University as a way to engage the children.
I used this silly website with them last year and it was such a hit. Thank you Pixar and Disney for your ingenious creations!

TRYING: to get the Christmas decorations cleaned up in a reasonable time frame this year - meaning, not leaving things out until the fall... Haha

WANTING: to be a little better about blogging this year. I know 2014 was crazy and I'm foolish to feel like I NEED to blog. I promise, I don't feel that way, but sometimes I feel like the days slip away so quickly that I don't have a chance to post things in a timely manner. For example, I'll be sharing a card with you from November (I think!) sometime in the next week or so...

FEELING: optimistic about the year ahead of us. We're definitely ready to put 2014 behind us.

ENJOYING: the time that Hubby and I got to spend with each other this holiday season. As much as we missed seeing our family, the days were definitely slower and more relaxed without having to worry about traveling and we definitely needed that.

So what are you looking forward to in 2015?! Do share!
